When was the last time you checked the fluids in your car?
C’mon, be honest… is it always on your “to-do” list but never gets done?
All car engines need oils, water and lubricants so that they run as effortlessly and as efficiently as possible. A well lubricated engine lasts longer and needs less overall work. It’s one aspect of car maintenance you should never avoid.
The most common fluids in a car are:
- Coolants
- Screen wash
- Anti Freeze
- Water
- Brake fluid
- Engine oil
- Power steering fluid
- And if you drive an auto, automatic transition fluid
It’s quite dangerous to drive your car with little or no fluids in the engine.
A simple thing like no screen wash means you are unable to clear your windscreen in certain types of weather or tough driving conditions. You may not see a danger on the road, and it’s an offence to drive with your windscreen obscured.
A radiator with no coolant soon overheats and causes all kinds of problems and a hefty repaur bill.
A car with no brake fluid is dangerous not only to the driver but the other cars on the road.
Let’s talk a little more on the brake fluid issue. Many motorists remember to check the oil, the water and screen wash but they rarely check the brake fluid. Brake fluid needs to changed every 2 years as it’s hygroscopic (absorbs moisture from surrounding areas). If you have just purchased a second hand car, check to see when the brake fluid was last replaced. If there is no record of a change in brake fluid then be safe and change it.
A quick physics lesson…
When the brake fluid absorbs moisture from it’s surrounding environment, the car’s brakes are less safe when you brake at high speed. High speed braking entails higher engine temperatures and the moisture in the brake fluid turns to steam and as you stamp on the brake, it feels like there is nothing there…
